W25 Kid Invent Theatre: Play On! Session A

Grades 4-6 • Saturdays, 9:30-11:00 AM, Jan. 4 – Mar. 8, 2025 • $225 Subscribers/$235 Non-subscribers

Put those newly-honed acting skills to work, rehearsing and performing an original play. Continue to work on diction, character development, and body awareness while also exploring ensemble building. Perform the play on the final day of class for your family! Returning students who have taken this class before are always welcome, as scripts are new each session. This class builds on the fall session's Kids Invent Theatre: Fall Playmakers however new students may sign up if they wish.

For ages 14 and older

Join Playhouse artistic director Katy Merriman,Waitress choreographer Kent Zimmerman, and other area theatre professionals in this four-part audition class series to fine tune auditioning skills for both plays and musicals. Come to one, two, or all four, whatever works in your schedule. Scholarships available through the Jeanne Hopson Angel Fund!

Before moving to Iowa in 2020, Kent Zimmerman lived in New York City for 23 years and has worked on Broadway, across the country, and in Europe in various shows. He'll teach you how to work with what you've got whether it's a double pirouette, a grapevine, or two left feet.

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical KIDS,  the 40 minute adaptation of the Broadway musical, Seussical!

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child, who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's challenge is twofold — not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

Auditions will be held from 4:00-6:00 PM on Friday, Mar. 14, to determine role assignment. All students enrolled must attend auditions.

Performances are at 4:30 PM on Friday, Mar. 21, and Sat., Mar. 22 at 11:00 AM. Each student receives 2 complimentary tickets to the performance of his or her choice. Additional tickets may be purchased for $5 each online at dmplayhouse.com beginning Mar. 1. Seating is general admission.

Join us at The Playhouse to create and explore the wonderful world of imagination! With Dr. Seuss and other books as our inspiration, we'll create our own characters, scenery, and costumes while learning about theatre. Share favorite moments with parents on the final day!

Using familiar books and plays, we'll act out scenes in large and small groups. We keep it light, but introduce beginning acting skills and ensemble building. Friends and family are invited on the final day to view highlights.

Explore storytelling through singing and movement in this fun, creative introduction to musical theatre. Parents are invited to come sing and dance with us on the final day of class!

Learn musical theatre show tunes and add basic choreography in a fun yet professional atmosphere. Participate in our spring musical revue showcase for family and friends on the final day.
